Additional Educational Experiences
Apprenticeship at Lanti Performing Arts (2020-2022)
Lanti Performing Arts is a small business located in Indian Trail that offers music and theatre classes to children ages 0-18. Music and theatre is taught through either one-on-one private lessons or through group classes. By offering a variety of classes, students are given a more complete and diverse education. The group classes range from summer camps to full 12-week acting lessons. The apprenticeship program is an opportunity for teenage students to use their talents to lead and empower others, in which they are directly responsible for leading summer camps for young children ages 5-12. Typically, camps are composed of around twenty children and two to three apprentices. Camps meet for three hours, five days a week. However, the workday for apprentices was split into two camps each day, one from 9 am-12 pm and the other from 1-4 pm. A one-hour break is placed in between camps to maintain cleanliness and to switch out staff if applicable. Responsibilities during camp hours included checking children in directly at the door, leading and assisting them in placing their belongings in the cubbies, initiating interaction between children, preparing crafts and necessary tables, encouraging participation, and directly leading integrated music activities. Such crafts ranged from assisting children in drawing, cutting, and gluing paper to ironing perler beads and making slime. Early music and acting activities included introducing simple beats and rhythms through a variety of instruments. A large circle was often made to better engage the campers, with apprentices distributed evenly throughout. This brings me to my next point, that teamwork and communication with other apprentices were also vital, along with taking the initiative to complete certain tasks without being told. It was imperative to have a level of professionalism and work ethic because of the many young, impressionable minds watching. I cannot stress enough how much my leadership and social skills were developed through this experience. A core component of my personality now is my ability to connect and collaborate with others. Such an experience has made me devoted to inspiring others and making a lasting difference in the community.
One unique aspect of being an apprentice that should be highlighted is that in addition to working with children, many precautions had to be taken due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, especially during 2020 and 2021. To ensure the safest possible environment for both the camp attendees and fellow staff members, such new policies were enforced by apprentices such as myself. They included, but were not limited to asking parents to remain outside of the building unless necessary, posting signs throughout the facility to remind students about good hygiene and safety protocols, working through plastic barriers installed at front desk windows, removing extra furniture and toys from the private lesson rooms and the lobby, and disinfecting all frequently touched surfaces and equipment at repeated regular intervals throughout the day. Visual inspections of each child for signs of illness and temperature checks were also required before the start of camp. While such measures were sometimes hard to impose on smaller children, working in an environment in which a virus could easily spread if not managed safely further developed my cleanliness and organizational skills. In a day and age where pandemics become increasingly more likely, I am thankful to have experience working around such a health hazard, as something similar will inevitably show back up in future jobs.
Volunteer Prom Event Organizer for UCEC
When I walked into the Prom Committee interest meeting in early February 2023, I genuinely had no idea what kind of experiences it would bring, or if I was even sure I wanted to join it in the first place. But prom was something special to me, and I wanted to be a part of putting together such an unforgettable night. Upon entering that meeting, I was greeted by a group of eight remarkable peers and four dedicated staff members, some of whom I had been in academic classes with or had as teachers in the past. From the get-go, being a member of such a small committee taught me how valuable a single person can be in generating feedback and ideas amongst a group of others. Even from that first interest meeting, the desire to participate resonated with me in an entirely new way. The first task we were challenged with was deciding on a cohesive theme, which proved to be more difficult than initially thought. Ideas of an enchanted garden, 1920s masquerade, and Hollywood red carpet event were all up in the air. I drew inspiration from both the Internet and physical prom catalogs, but it was up to the group to collectively decide on one theme. Such a process entailed dozens of whiteboard drawings, creating Google Slide presentations of collected images, and writing up brief lists of props and decorations needed to make each theme a reality. The purpose of envisioning each theme helped narrow down the choice to a 1920s masquerade, as it would be the most cost-effective method without having to sacrifice any aesthetics or atmosphere due to limited supplies.

The next major milestone was for the committee to split into separate groups, each responsible for a different aspect of the event. Specifically, my good friend and I oversaw advertising and ticket sales, which I am incredibly thankful for. I directly created a set of posters through the graphic design website Canva that displayed the venue location, event date and time, theme, and a QR code to purchase tickets. One of those posters is sampled on this page. In addition to designing elements to hang around the school, I was co-responsible for updating a list of guests and ticket sales. There were two main ways to buy prom tickets, through certain teachers in person, or by purchasing them online. But regardless of the method purchased, all attendees had to be registered in an online Google Doc to ensure entry on the actual prom date, along with their dates from other schools. Each activity developed my creativity abilities in a professional setting while being able to complete complex tasks in a timely manner.
Lastly, but most importantly, there was the actual day of the event, in which setup took place very early that morning. From 9am to 1pm, the rest of the committee and I were responsible for unloading and putting together the decorations ordered, stringing lights and garlands, setting up individual tables and their centerpieces, inflating balloons, and piecing together photo opportunity spots. Looking back on the experience, I have further developed my planning, organizational, spatial awareness, interpersonal, and time management skills. The big takeaway from organizing the event was learning how to work closely with a small team of individuals who are directly responsible for the mood, decor, lighting, and overall atmosphere of an entire venue. But most rewardingly, I can definitely say I had a significant hand in crafting a night which is the epitome of my peers overall high school expierence.
